My Thoughts: This was a cute start to a new series! Although it took a little while for the real action to get rolling, the author’s spaced out the development of the characters and main problems really well. They especially did a good job of dealing with death at a place where everybody’s parents are dead.
Since Spirit’s parents die in the beginning, I knew that the story would include scenes with Spirit dealing with her parent’s death. Most times I feel like authors either have the character moving on too quickly or not at all. The time it took Spirit to start dealing with her parents being gone seemed more realistic than most books. She had her good moments and her bad ones.
I also really liked the other characters. The descriptions of these characters didn’t go as in depth as other books, but they were introduced in such a way that I didn’t want to know everything about them. I wanted to figure it out along the way because they were so interesting. I especially like the developing romance (and possibly a love triangle) that starts in the first books. It’s a slow romance, but not in a bad way. When written correctly, I have no problem waiting for love (or “love”) to develop.
Although this wasn’t the type of beginning to a series where almost nothing happens and it’s more like a prologue to the real beginning of the story, Legacies reminded me of Harry Potter (only) in the way that each book had its own adventure yet still contributed to the overall problem. This is only the first book in the series but it already seems similar in that way. And if it keeps with the theme of the first book, I can’t wait for the second book, as well as however many books will be in the entire series!
