The Duff review

Description: Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper is cynical and loyal, and she doesn't think she's the prettiest of her friends by a long shot. She's also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush. In fact, Bianca hates him. And when he nicknames her "Duffy," she throws her Coke in his face.

But things aren't so great at home right now. Desperate for a distraction, Bianca ends up kissing Wesley. And likes it. Eager for escape, she throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with Wesley.

Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out that Wesley isn't such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she's falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone.

My Thoughts: This is the book I chose when I started to get tired of fantasy stories. Fantasy is one of my favorite genres, but every now and then I need a break from werewolves and vampires (no offense). This was a good contemporary novel to read since I wanted to indulge myself in a more realistic world.

My favorite part about this book was Bianca. I love a lot of Bianca’s qualities. She's independent, funny, and pushes through her weaknesses. With the exception of what she did with Wesley, (*blushes*) Bianca resisted the temptation to submit to society’s whims. Even when she thought she was the Duff, she fought to remain herself, which I loved.

I really liked her two best friends. They’re both popular, and one is a cheerleader, but they didn’t fall under the stereotypical popular girl image. They were kind and empathetic.

As far as Wesley, I was surprised that I liked him as much as I did. Sure, I wanted him to hurt him every time something negative happened as a result of him calling Bianca a Duffy, but I still like him. Another reason this is surprising is because I didn’t get to know him as well as I thought I should have by the end of the book. My only explanation is that the author is good at creating sympathetic characters very quickly.

One thing that I was for lack of a better term, shocked about was all the cussing and sex.... That sentence makes it sound worse than it actually is... I wasn’t used to so much of the two in a young adult novel. I was wondered about this until I remembered how old the author is. She’s my age, give or take a year (or months). That’s when I got into the book, because I realized that her version of a teenager’s life nowadays is very close to real life, which sucks. Not that the author or this books sucks, just that fact that the amount of the two aspects are nothing compared to the amount in a teenager’s actual life.

Although I don’t really relate to cussing and sex personally, it was nice to have a more realistic story. It’s relatable, because of course every girl has felt like a Duff, at one point (or many) in time. And also, at least in my school, just because you were seen as a cheerleader , or a jock, it didn’t mean that was the only thing you could be. I like that The Duff didn’t have any one-dimensional characters. Overall, this is a very impressive start for 18 year old author Kody Keplinger. I look forward to reading many more of her (future) books.

Looking Forward to...

Description: The Breakfast Club meets The Blizzard of the Century: A young adult suspense novel from PW Flying Start author Michael Northrop.

Scotty and his friends Pete and Tommy are among the last kids waiting to get picked up at their high school. The snow has been coming down for hours, and it's starting to look like no one is coming for them. As the snow piles higher, their teacher Mr. Gossell leaves them behind to seek help--and disappears into the drifts outside. Now the seven remaining students are on their own, with no food and no electricity, facing a night of sleeping on classroom floors. Will their friendships survive the night . . . and will THEY?
My thoughts: I'm a huge fan of Jonh Huges movies, and love the Day after Tommorrow type stories, so this sounds like a good story.

Book teaser - StarCrossed

Panic seized my belly and I fought back nausea. You got away. You got away. I repeated the words silently until I no longer felt like gagging. Bruises would heal. But Tegan ... I swallowed back another wave of panic.

Get hold of yourself if you want to live through the night.

The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms review

Description: Yeine Darr is an outcast from the barbarian north. But when her mother dies under mysterious circumstances, she is summoned to the majestic city of Sky. There, to her shock, Yeine is named an heiress to the king. But the throne of the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is not easily won, and Yeine is thrust into a vicious power struggle with a pair of cousins she never knew she had. As she fights for her life, she draws ever closer to the secrets of her mother's death and her family's bloody history.

With the fate of the world hanging in the balance, Yeine will learn how perilous it can be when love and hate - and gods and mortals - are bound inseparably together.

My Thoughts: I had never heard of this book until a few months ago, yet I heard there was a lot of hype behind this book. Where was I? I’m not sure, but I’m almost glad I didn’t know about it earlier. Not knowing about this book led me to have few expectations. What got me to buy a copy was the great rating it got over on The Book Smugglers website. Because I didn’t want to have big expectations, I decided to only look at their rating, instead of their actual review. I knew I HAD to have it because it contained a city in the sky, an heir bound for death, and gods. Seeing as how I love mythology, I was more than ready to try this book out.

I’m glad I did. I loved it so much that it will undoubtedly be in my top books read in 2010 list. It had romance, wit, political scandal, and elegant dialogue. I couldn't go too many pages without finding a line that told a poetic truth, or made me giggle due to its cleverness. The romance was sexy and dangerous. It was even mysterious at first, because initially I didn't know who Yeine's (main) love interest was.

I loved the way the author writes. This has no similarities to the Wicked Lovely series, but it does remind me of why I love Melissa Marr. Their ability to create worlds and tie everything together is amazing. Everything flowed for me, even when I didn't quite understand certain scenes (or forgot what character went with which name). There wasn’t a real cliffhanger at the end, but I'm extremely excited to see what the characters are up to, and how they're dealing with their present settings. I’m getting The Broken Kingdoms (second book in the series) as soon as possible.

These are the books I got over the last two weeks. And of course like any other week, I'm extremely excited about them all!

Nightshade Review

Description: Calla Tor has always known her destiny: After graduating from the Mountain School, she'll be the mate of sexy alpha wolf Ren Laroche and fight with him, side by side, ruling their pack and guarding sacred sites for the Keepers. But when she violates her masters' laws by saving a beautiful human boy out for a hike, Calla begins to question her fate, her existence, and the very essence of the world she has known. By following her heart, she might lose everything--including her own life. Is forbidden love worth the ultimate sacrifice?

My Thoughts: I started this book knowing that many, and in fact all the reviews about this book I’d come in contact with where positive. I’d also been looking for a good “werewolf” book to read because although I loved werewolves, I’d never actually read one.

I have to say that it lived up to its hype. Although, I thought I’d like both Ren and Shay equally (which I didn’t) but hey, you win some you lose some. My favorite part of this book besides Ren is that all of the characters were well developed. I didn’t just like Calla, I liked her best friend, and her brother, and his best friend, etcetera etcetera. I also like that there’s a real reason behind the main problem in the book. It might be fictitious, but it makes more since then –

“Hey I don’t like you.”

“Hey, I don’t like you either”

“Well then, let’s fight, and then when we die, let’s have our children and their children fight our battle.”

“Okay”

There was real history behind the problems in Nightshade.

Now to Ren, he made me sigh, he made me blush, and he made my heartache, almost as much as a fictional character possibly could. All throughout the book I kept thinking that if Calla wouldn’t take him, I definitely would! As far as Shay goes, I’m sad to say that I found him annoying. Not annoying as in he took away from the book or that I personally hated him, but annoying like I didn’t see how Calla could like this pup when she had a full grown alpha male (wolf talk).

Overall it was a great book, and appealing enough that I read before classes started, and ate with one hand this week. Nuff said.

Book Teaser: The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms

My people tell stories of the night I was born. They say my mother crossed her legs in the middle of labor and fought with all her strength not to release me into the world. I was born anyhow, of course; nature cannot be denied. Yet it does not surprise me that she tried.
